about

During the part of the plague, when all was shut down, and many were home, I performed 2 live shows per week on Facebook, along with participating in several larger live online experiments. It was through these shows that {AN} Eel became aware of me, and eventually made contact with an offer to collaborate through file sharing. {AN} Eel is somewhere in Canada, I am in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. We have never met.

Our first collaboration went incredibly smoothly - we agreed on everything. This resulted in Solar Medians at Dawn - bonniekane.bandcamp.com/album/solar-medians-at-dawn

{AN} Eel interacted with my music in a way that I would never have anticipated. His unique vision and sounds take the music in a direction that is wondrous to me, and quite different than my previous and current live work (solo, duos, bands). A beautiful surprise. It reinforces my belief that one never knows how another perceives them. And, that we all hear and see the same thing differently.

Would we, could we, do this live? Would we have even decided to collaborate if we had met in a live setting? Would we have even been traveling in the same musical circles? Who knows? And it doesn’t matter.

Clarity of intent and the deepest sincerity are part of what makes all art communicate. And we have that.

To last, the art needs to stand on its’ own, touching those who have never met, heard, or seen the artist. Thus the commonality of this experience called living is shared beyond place, and we each come to know that we are part of the great stream of life force energy. We then can draw strength, inspiration, understanding, and compassion, enabling our individual existence to become brighter.

“and so, we ran”… starts at this point.

This is the second collaboration between {AN} Eel and myself. From my end, the flute music is from my Transcendent Winds 5 amp flute project - excerpted from several of my pandemic Facebook live shows, “An Hour of Calm”. While so many struggle for life, I am continually struck by the carelessness for which many treat this life and the lives of others - not just humans, but animals, plants, rocks, everything. Plague, war, environmental degradation - my thoughts on this are all here in this music. It was even emphasized when I came upon scores of amputated trees while kayaking. The images burned my eyes and I took tons of pictures - some of them resulting in the artwork for this release.

Now this is my secret back story, that even {AN} Eel was unaware of when creating his part of the music. He will read about it for the first time, like you, when he reads this. I look forward to reading what he has to say about it all…

So this is truly a unique form of international collaboration, grown out of the plague, made possible by advancing technology, and brought to you lovingly by myself, {AN} Eel, and the beautiful, dedicated, and insightful folks at Hamfuggi Records.

May all your beautiful dreams come true.
